Install Mac OS X Mountain Lion on VMware – Ultimate Guide

Wanna try Mac OS X Mountain Lion, but don’t have an iMac or Mac Book Pro? Well today is your day as I have build a guide just for you to kick start VMware with Mac OS X Mountain Lion! Well, First of all we should thank souldevteam as they are the one who created a VMware image just for the VMware! Just so you know, this is a mac running on VMware so you might not get all the features and yes its definitely  depends on your hardware that you have.

WARNING: This method is completely for testing and learning purpose only.
UPDATE 19/06/2016 : Updated the links since the old links are down!

VMware Compatibility:

Let’s see if your hardware is compatible or not. The important thing that you need in this is Hardware Virtualization Technology (VT). Make sure that your CPU has this option. Where to check this? Well if you have an intel i5 processor like mine then click here and at the bottom of the table, you can see whether “Intel® Virtualization Technology (VT-x)” is there or not. You can check out the entire list of processors that are VT enabled by clicking here. Alright so you have it? Then head over to your BIOS setup (Click Esc for HP Laptop or F9/DELETE button for other systems mostly), select Advanced Settings and you would see “Virtualization Technology” and Enable it.

Moving on, You need sufficient amount of RAM to power the virtual machine. I would recommend having 4 GB of RAM at least on your PC & assign at least 2 GB for the virtual machine. If you have 6GB of RAM like mine, then allocate 4 GB to the VM for a smooth performance! Have it? Good.

Procedure

Now, Download the VMware Workstation 9 Trial or Full version and install it like normal.

Next, You need to download a pre installed VMware image of Mountain Lion and two other tools. Download “OS X Mountain Lion 10.8.2 VMware Image” about 4.40 GB, “VMware Unlocker – Mac OS X Guest“. Well, depending upon your internet connection, it might take some minutes or hours. For an average 4 mbps connection, it would take approximately 2.5 hours.

The below step is to be taken if your CPU does not support Virtualization Technology:

Extract everything and navigate to the folder “VMware Unlocker – Hardware Virtualization Bypasser” and open “vmware-vmx-patch.exe” file as an Administrator (Right click the file and select Run as administrator), click Apply Patch and select the place where you have installed VMware (If you don’t know where it is then probably by default it would be on “C:\Program Files (x86)\VMware\VMware Workstation” for 64 bit Windows OS and for 32 bit Windows OS, it would be at “C:\Program Files\VMwareVMware Workstation”.)

From my attention, after applying this patch on VMware Workstation 9, I have received some error like “0 out of 11 patterns replaced at least once. The patch will not work“. Well even when it says like that to you then just ignore it because the patch works fine and you could have the option to select Mac OS X on VMware.  For VMware 8, 7 there wouldn’t show any errors like this and it will work fine. Make sure you apply this patch first before loading the Mac OS X Mountain Lion into VMware.

Done? Moving on to next step, Open “VMware Unlocker – Mac OS X Guest”,  run the program “win-install.exe” as an administrator (Again, right click this file and click Run as administrator). By running this you will see some codes in the command prompt, Let it run until the command prompt get exits automatically. It would take only seconds.

All right, your almost there in setting up VMware. Now you need to load up VMware from your Programs List, Click File and then select Open. When it shows a dialog box to select the vmware file, just navigate to the folder “OS X Mountain Lion” and select “OS X Mountain Lion” in it.

Now you need to click “Edit virtual machine settings” and you could see another dialog box with settings.

Here you can increase the RAM to 2 GB or more, increase the processors to 2 or 4

Another important thing here is to select “CD/DVD (IDE)” and select the setting  “Use ISO image file”, after that click Browse and navigate to “VMware 8.x SeriesTools” and select “darwin.iso” (Please download the file by clicking the link).

Why are we loading this? Well basically if you run Mac OS X Mountain Lion for the first time, you would see it in 1024 x 768 resolution and for those who has monitors or laptop’s having screen resolution more than that like 1600 x 1200 which is mine, you need to run this tool. I will explain how to run it at the next step.

Now, If you want to access some files from Windows, then select the “Option” tab, click “Shared Folders”, select Always Enabled option on the right and click Add. Now just go click Next on the dialog box and select “Browse” option and select a folder you would like to share. (For example, Music folder)

All right, now that’s all for the settings and now select Ok and Power up select “Power on this virtual machine”. Please note that it would take up to 5 minutes for the first boot and later on it would take up to 1 minute! So don’t worry about the delay as that’s a usual delay!

Now go through the setup in which you can see on the screen, Connect to iTunes if you want, and that’s it for the installation and you can see the desktop with maximum 1024 x 768 resolution. Now you will see VMware Tools drive in the desktop of Mac, open it and you could see a folder and inside that folder, There is a file named “Install VMware Tools”  and I want you to double click that file and run the installation. While you open that installer, you will see a box which says “This package will run a program to determine if the software can be installed. To keep your computer secure, you should only run programs or install software from a trusted source. If you’re not sure about this software’s source, click Cancel to stop the program and installation.” Please ignore that message & click Continue because this software is perfectly fine to run and it just gives you the ability to run your Mac on the full resolution that your computer can support. After that it will ask whether to reboot, so go ahead click reboot and wait for the Mac to load up. Again, for some users, it would say “The installation failed.” well, don’t worry about that, you just need to reboot the virtual machine manually (Click Apple logo on the top to select Restart options). After it Mac loads back, select the full screen option in vmware and you can get your native display resolution!

Now you can see the beautiful desktop in full screen with your native resolution of your computer and yes almost all the functions available on the Mac OS X Mountain Lion is available (Depends upon your hardware and VMware limitations).

That’s All! You can now try this & comment on my blog!
